Reduce Reuse Recycle song

Tiny Tin

Mother Earth Song

Sunday, November 27, 2011

Oh I Love this Earth

Well I love this earth
And I don’t want to hurt it
So this is what I’m gonna do
Gonna take good care of what’s already here
Tell others to do that too.

Gonna turn off the water when I brush my teeth
And rinse my brush when it’s done
But I won’t let the water go drip, drip, drip
And tighten the faucet with my thumb

I’m gonna turn off the lights when I leave the room
And close that freezer door
The refrigerator too-
Cos you know it’s true
Being smart is really cool.

I’m gonna sort out the trash
in 3 different batches

To help the recycling man
There’s plastic
and glass
and the paper too
And icky stuff stuck to the pan

Oh I love this earth
And I don’t want to hurt it
So this is what I’m gonna do
I’m gonna take good care of what’s already here
And hope you will do that too

Gonna keep the streams clean
And the water too

So the fishes and whales
can swim
And the clean ocean water and the rivers and the ponds
So we all can jump right in.

Oh I love this earth
and I don’t want to hurt it
So this is what I’m gonna do
I’m gonna take good care of what’s already here
And hope you will do that too
And I hope you will do that too.

Trouble with Weather

We have had lots of bad weather with storms and tornado warnings. The bad weather is travelling right over New Zealand. The wind blew the lid off Dana's rabbit hutch and luckily they weren't in there. A thunderstorm hit a tree near Samara's farm and it fell over and crushed the fence. Anais's tramp flipped over and broke their washing line. Some lightening nearly struck Kezia's house. It was right above them. When the thunder and lightning hit Paige had no power for a couple of hours. The lightning went right beside Olliver's house and their windows went blue. In Wellington there was a hailstorm and hail was the size of golf balls and it broke a bike in half. In Waikenanae there was a tornando. Water got into Meg's phone cable and her neighbourhood didn't have any phones for a while. The hailstones frightened Paige's cat who had to sleep inside. A plane from Auckland got hit with lightning and it had to make an emergency landing. Rosalia's car got a little smash in their window from the hail.

Bad weather affects animals who might lose their habitat and the wind blows away their food. Trees can be blown over and die. Lightning can hit trees and break them. Rain causes landslides and floods gardens and lawns. So bad weather does affect the environment.

Paige's News

At Paige's house they have made a garden and a roundabout out of old tyres. It is like a circle with flowers and roses planted inside the tyres. The tyres are not being wasted.

Meg's News

At ASAP out the back there are heaps of tyres that kids like to play in and build things out of- like a house with seats and tables in it. Meg is impressed that they are reusing tyres instead of taking them to the dump.

Molly's News

There was a cliff rock that fell down onto a house in Ohope. An 18 year old boy was killed. There had been lots of rain and slips. An older man escaped.

Oliver's News

An Emeperor penguin has come onto New Zealand shores. This is very rare. It has travelled from Antarctica. They say it must have been travelling since February. It is very, very fat.
Does anybody know exactly how far it has swum? If you do, post a comment to let us know.

What's going on this week?

Use the right bin!

Today we checked all the bins around the school. Some were great BUT we found plastic in food scrap bins and we found food in the big rubbish bins!

We want all the food scraps to feed our worms and to feed animals- like Mrs Duff's chickens and Mrs Rogers' chickens.

The Envirokids will be checking. We ask everyone to make the right choice and follow the green part of the rainbow. Please put the right things in the right bins.

Thank you from the Envirokids

What is the Environment?

We've been thinking...
Anneke and Molly- The evironment is what we live in. It is inside our ozone layer and all around the atmosphere. It is what animals live in and we need to look after it. The environment is part of our life. The environment needs our help.
Meg and Paige- the environment is our life and it is our future. It is trees, plants and everything else. Animals need the environment. The environment is our world.
Samara and Anais- it is a safe place for native creatures where they can build their homes.
Rhiannon and Charlotte- it is a family of animals, bugs, people and creatures. It is a forest with native animals in it.
Memphis and Arwen and Oliver- It is our friend and it is green and it is our family. The Earth is our environment.
Sophie and Kezia- It is all the land and all the sea and all the sisters and brothers of us, like animals and plants.

Wisdom the 60 year old albatross

Wisdom is the oldest known wild bird in the USA.She lives on Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, near Hawaii.
Can you beleive she has a healthy chick at her age? She has probably raised 30 to 35 chicks in her lifetime.
Even more amazing than this is that she has recently survived the tsunami that hit her island following Japan's 9.0 magnitude earthquake.Thousands of birds died. It is not known whether her chick survived.
