Uenuku is a Super Star!

We now have 3 laying hens. Not every day but most days, so we can start thinking about selling their eggs from the office.  What a clever chicken! We are so proud of our hens.

The Enviro Kids admiring the amazing display Mrs Harris and Mrs Harris put up in our foyer. It is all the classes pictures of parts of our school Care Code. We are very proud of our rainbow and the beautiful display we've created.

Spring Cleaning the Chickens!

In the weekend Mrs Palmer attempted to wash the vaseline dirt off the hens. They were not thrilled about their bath and Mrs Palmer and Georgia got quite wet too! I'm not sure they look much cleaner but the water was black when we'd finished.

Enviro Day Antics

Today was Term 3's Enviro Action Day...
We started with an assembly. We wandered the Uenuku Walkway and did our bit for Keep NZ Beautiful. Then we tidied up our class garden, met the lamb, clean the chicken coop, cooked delicious pikelets and watched the original Lorax.

Summer gets us all buzzing...

We have been talking about having a session making reusable beeswax lunch wraps. We were wondering about the cost of beeswax and how much it would cost to purchase a lump big enough for all of us?
Then wonderful Summer wrote a letter to a man who was researching around bees and asked if we could have some of his wax. He was very generous and gave us plenty.

Summer you are a star! What wonderful initiative, no wonder you're an Enviro Kid!

Whakarongo Gardening Group visit MSS for inspiration

On Friday we had a lovely group of keen garden enthusiasts from Whakarongo School. They  are planning on starting a gardening group at their school and came to be inspired by the Green Team's work, Mrs Cowan and all the lovely school class gardens.
It was nice to be looked at as an inspirational school. We enjoyed their visit.

Eating a Root Vegetable

We've been eating beetroot. Some of us had never eaten it before. Most of us liked it and some of us wanted more... and more...

Weeding in Te Paparahi Piwakawaka

This huge dock took some effort to pull out of the ground. Docks grow long tap roots.

Harvesting Beetroot

We have harvested a great crop of beetroot. The beetroot has been donated to Manchester House.

No it's our Eco Warriors wearing their new capes. Keep an eye out for us in the next assembly.

Don't Waste Good Food! Be a Broccoli Stalker

Why? Kiwis throw away over 2,500 tonnes of broccoli stalks and leaves every year. That’s a lot of food going to waste that could be eaten.

Having a snack off the top of the food pyramid

The chickens enjoyed some leftover popcorn from the Senior Team's meeting. Look at them scoffing it down. As Nova would say it is a snack for a treat, only to eat sometimes!

How is an egg formed?

KFC is laying eggs!

Guess what? KFC is finally earning her keep! She has laid 2 eggs in the last 3 days! Yay, it was so exciting to find an egg in the chicken coop. We are very proud of her. Hopefully the other two will follow her example and start laying too!

What does an Enviroschool do?

Yesterday we asked ourselves the big question, What does an enviroschool do? We discussed our roles and class jobs and then put together a collage.

The chooks have their first feather cut!?

Yesterday special guest Mrs Reynolds came along to Enviro Kids and helped us clip the wings of the hens. Uenuku, Lightning and KFC were very patient with only KFC having a little peck. We clip their wings so the can't fly away. We just clip one so if they fly they will go round in a circle but still be able to get out of harms way.
They are still looking gorgeous.

First Enviro Action Day

Friday 23 March was our first Enviro Action Day of the year. We kicked off with an assembly where guest speaker Rowena wowed us with some Plastic Fantasic not information. Then we went off and gardened, planted daffodils, made and ate fruit kebabs, visited Te Paparahi Piwakaka, discussed our enviro jobs and made amazing signs for our environment using bottle tops.

Last cuddles with Unicorn the rooster. He is off to live on a farm with the Cudbys.
